Summertime Snacks For Cool Dogs

Happy summer from me, Chopper. As you’ve likely gathered, Otis and I are quite outdoorsy. However, as members of the flat nose society, the heat is not always our friend.

It’s easy for cool pups to become hot dogs on heated days, especially when they play as hard as we do. All dogs need to stay hydrated and cool.

Our human mom crafts culinary masterpieces to keep us cool in summer. Obviously, we love treats. I have a sensitive tummy. The limited ingredients in these treats don’t challenge my stomach. Mom knows that simple is best with me.

I’m wiggling my butt just thinking about these recipes.

Apple-Yogurt Ice Bite

  • One cup of fat-free plain or vanilla yogurt
  • One apple (we like red or McIntosh)

Chop apple into small pieces. Combine yogurt and apple bits in a blender. Blend until thick and smooth. Pour mixture into an ice tray. Freeze until firm.

Add a little honey or some berries before blending if you want to get fancy with the ice bites. Mom says berries are full of antioxidants so they’re good for us. I prefer strawberries, but Otis enjoys both blueberries and strawberries.

Peanut Butter Banana Popsicle

Heat peanut butter in a saucepan on low heat. Add water and stir until peanut butter dissolves in water until it bubbles. Remove from heat. Set aside until room temperature.

Cut up or mash banana. Stir into peanut butter mixture and mix well. Pour mixture into an ice tray. Freeze until firm.

Use any kind of peanut butter as long as it doesn’t contain xylitol. Your pup might like crunchy or smooth. Mom prefers to give us reduced fat peanut butter.

Leftover Mix

I love it when there’s more mix than space in the ice tray. Mom fills my Retreads Turtle and pops it in the freezer. The Busy Belly on my toy makes it easier for me to sneak my snack away from my brother.

I’m sure your best friend would be pleased to prewash your mixing bowl and cool saucepan.

I hope you enjoy these tasty summertime treats. Share photos with us on Facebook or use #chopperandotis on Instagram!

Until next time--
